Historically Southeastern Colorado has been
the land of the Apache, Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Comanche, Kiowa and Ute
people. These natives and their unknown ancestors have left evidence
of their presence on the rock walls of the canyons along the
Purgatoire and Apisapa Rivers. In 1820 the Santa Fe Trail opened up
across this land. Since the mid-19th Century this land has
been the home of Hispanic and Anglo sheep and cattle Ranchers.
